POWER OR SPEED : MOSLEY OR PACQUIAO

by Earlie Doriman
In boxing, style and stamina could make the difference and these tell apart victory from defeat. Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines and Sugar Shane Mosley of the United States will define the true meaning of style and stamina as they collide on May 7 2011 in Las Vegas over the WBO Welterweight World Title. Manny or commonly known as ‘PACMAN’, the best pound-for pound boxer of the world famous for his speed and incredible foot works is waiting few more days to test the power and strength of Shane Mosley in twelve rounds of boxing extravaganza.

Earlier this week, Mosley conveyed that his powerful punches could spell the difference and that if Pacquiao could not withstand this, the Filipino legend will get the biggest upset of his boxing career. Mosley, as the world knows is a hungry, determined and is willing to face the best boxer there is. He is more recognized as a powerful puncher and this is expectedly the weapon he is equipped with in the upcoming fight. Most boxing critics think Mosley is old enough to fight Manny who is still in his prime years. But Mosley consider this as the best opportunity to prove that he remains the ‘power punch’ and use this to give Pacquaio his knock-out.

LAYMAN’s TEN COMMANDENTS

by Earlie Doriman
Early this afternoon, my very good friend Garex, who is now in New Zealand with his family e-mailed me and shared this very inspiring message.  I find this exceptionally relevant and an honest reminder to everyone regardless of status and situation in life. As we endeavor a happy life, sometimes we do not realize that we carry too far our desires and end up distorting the simple gifts that do provide the genuine happiness that we unceasingly seek. The confidence that we are doing everything right might just turn out too insensible to appreciate the real purpose of our existence. I wish to thank the author of the lines below who I believe has a heart full of compassion and gratitude of life’s simplicity and wisdom.
I like to share this message from someone who has written these beautiful words. Read and try to understand the deeper meaning of it. They are like the ten commandments to follow in life all the time.

SLEEPING WITH TWO QUERUBIMS

by Earlie Doriman
MY TWO QUERUBIMS:
Thomas (on the left) and Matthew (on the right).
They both caught Chickenpox but are better now.
Thomas suffered blister infection and the traces of his
chickenpox are still obvious in this photo.
There is no happiest moment in a father’s life than to see his children growing, happy, content, and full of love.  My two sons provide a different kind of bliss and inspiration to my life. They make my existence more colourful and they added an exceptional meaning to fatherhood. That is why when something goes wrong with them, there is equally no immediate space to contain the worry that I could feel. As I have shared in my older post ‘Chickenpox and Intravenous Cannulation’, my wife and I went through a couple of horrendous weeks when they caught the chickenpox virus, one after another, which was made worst when my youngest son Thomas was eventually rushed to the hospital and stayed for four long days due to complications.
Their obsession of sunglasses never
discriminate the time of the day.
But, thanks God they are both well although the traces of the crusted blisters are still visible in my little Thomas’ innocent face, at least they conquered the ordeal, actually we conquered the situation together. Their mum was most pleased and relieved that her two angels are back to their old selves again. God truly knows when things are destined to happen, and He wants them to happen at the right time. Thomas’ illness happened at the start of the Easter holidays, which means I am free to look after him since it is my school break and my wife had her annual leave from work. Simple miracles that deserve heartfelt acknowledgement.

A KISSLESS WEDDING

by Earlie Doriman
It surely sounds strange but when Prince William and Catherine Middleton get married on the 29th of April 2011 there will be no ceremonial kiss to witness. The future king of England will be deprived of the altar kiss as the serious protocol of the Church of England (CoE) prohibits such display of wedding practice. It is even forbidden inside Westminster Abbey, the venue of the Royal wedding.
But guests and excited fans and supporters will not be completely disappointed because accordingly, William and Kate will share that first couple kiss at the balcony of the Buckingham Palace after the church ceremonies. The ‘balcony kiss’ as it is called now by the royal historians has become a particular event to look forward to, which was made famous during the wedding of  Princess Diana and Prince Charles, William’s parents back in 1981.

AN EASTER GREETINGS

Happy Easter Sunday to all. May the resurrection of Jesus continue to inspire us to believe that Life with love, faith, good works, and charity brings forth reward and promise of an everlasting life.

HAVE A VERY MEMORABLE AND BLISSFUL EASTER SUNDAY.

FOR THE RECORD: PACQUIAO AGAINST MOSLEY

by Earlie Doriman

Two great boxers will display their respective style, power, speed, and determination to affirm supremacy or accept humble defeat on May 7 2011. Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquaio and Sugar Shane Mosley, two of the world’s current best fighters will certainly build an explosion inside the ring as they exchange punches and techniques in Las Vegas next month. Pacquiao, considered the finest pound-for-pound boxer with eight championship belts in eight weight division will face the much bigger, older, and experienced Mosley in one of the most anticipated fights of the year. As boxing fanatics wait for that big day, the heat is already rising and bettors are putting up pressure even more.
Let me share to you the list of their last ten fights and how they prevailed in those previous battles.

MANNY ‘PACMAN’ PACQUIAO
Manny 'PACMAN' Pacquiao

1. Antonio Margarito. The best fight so far, rolled to complete the 12 rounds and the fans were ecstatic and satisfied. Pacquiao prevailed with a Unanimous Decision.
2. Joshua Clottey. Clottey endured but was not impressive. Pacquiao won by a Unanimous Decision.
3. Miguel Cotto. Many thought Cotto could bring a big upset, but the prediction was proved wrong when Pacquiao won by TKO at the last round of the fight.
4. Ricky Hatton. It was anticipated to be the best fight but boxing aficionados went home broken and disappointed when Hatton dropped like a log in middle of the ring. Just two rounds and the fight was stopped. Hatton declared not to fight again and eventually stopped his boxing career.

CHICKENPOX and INTRAVENOUS CANNULATION

by Earlie Doriman
When springtime comes, one of the most common diseases comes around too: the CHICKENPOX. In fact, it is dubbed as a classic childhood illness because in most cases, it happens to children below ten years old. And my two sons were not an exception as they suffered this viral illness recently.
To us, the last couple of weeks were the most challenging so far this year. My two children had chickenpox, one after another. My eldest son Matthew got the virus from the nursery. When I picked him up from school, I noticed threenor four red spots on his neck but I thought those were just plain rash marks. When I changed him at home there were few more around his body, my wife declared it was chickenpox. The following day, it was obvious that my son has indeed caught the airborne disease. It was all over his body including his tongue and mouth.

INSIDE MANNY PACQUIAO’s PUNCHES

by Earlie Doriman
Manny 'PACMAN' Pacquiao, considered the sports hero of the Philippines
Filipinos and the world have another big event to look forward to next Month. On May 7, 2011, Manny Pacquiao, the Philippines sports hero, will climb into the boxing arena again to prove his power against the much bigger opponent and highly regarded Shane Mosley. Manny Pacquiao or simply ‘PACMAN’ earned the admiration of boxing fans by collecting eight championship belts in eight divisions. His last battle against Antonio Margarito was the best fight to remember when he demonstrated in 12 exciting rounds why he deserves to be called the best pound-for-pound boxer of the world.
I used to know Manny Pacquiao as an ordinary person who aside from doing professional boxing, was also a very good billiard player. If my memory serves me right, it was between 1998-2004 when I could always spot him playing in one of Davao City’s ( Davao is a progressive city of southern Philippines) billiard halls along Bolton Street.

SUMMER AT SPRINGTIME

by Earlie Doriman
A very beautiful feel of summer at springtime in England
It is disappointing to find yourself so unable to think spontaneously, you would love to write but you just could not start a smart line. I mean, there are times when you feel so absorbed to engage in an interesting subject, you want to go deeper into the topic, yet found yourself jammed in a poorly organized first paragraph. The more you go over the sentences again and again, the more they become senseless and frustrating. But the good thing though, after leaving this piece for two days, I am able to collect the better bits of what I was supposed to share.

As they say, England has indeed a strange weather, unpredictable, frustrating, distracting, and simply different. When it is suppose to be bright and sunny, it would rain. There is no assurance of a summer too because if it would not rain, the sun might just be hiding in oblivion. To my recollection, in 2008 we snowed really hard at Easter Sunday which was a lot odd. The following years were fair. It used to snow in January, but last winter it started in November. There are good days though to be happy about.

CRIMES AND LETHAL INJECTION

by Earlie Doriman
Death GURNEY used in lethal injection.
Barely two weeks ago, on 30th March 2011, three of my countrymen were executed in China by Lethal Injection. The Crime: Drug Trafficking.  The felony was indeed a heinous offence that deserved an appropriate penalty. Many would surely agree to the extreme punishment the three people were unable to escape from the Chinese laws. But to me, death penalty was too much to end a human life. It is more disheartening to know that they were victims too of a worldwide drug syndicate that lured them, exploited them, and used them as drug mules against their innocence.
To the criminal justice system of China, that implemented death penalty by lethal injection in 1997, justice has been served. To the Divine Law, three lives were wasted, wrongfully claimed, and mercilessly extinguished. I am not certain how many more people await their turn inside the cold cells, helplessly counting the tick of the clock as the time moves closer to their death. Waiting for the instruction to lie on the reproving bed and allow the needles to slowly and painfully seize away the sacred life that God has entrusted to each one of us.

THERE IS LIFE IN HUMOUR

by Earlie Doriman
I have always been interested at hilarious stories. When I was a kid, I remember an Uncle who used to tell us jokes about anything. He was very popular amongst children my age because he never ran out of short stories and once he started to share his wittiness, we glued ourselves around him to listen and laugh our hearts out. I could not keep in mind now how he did that, but what I remember clearly were the happy faces of my childhood friends and the empty silence that would take over every time my Uncle declared he was done. After he left, we all tried to replicate the jokes and made it our own by saying them again prompting another bursts of laughter. But there is nothing better than the original piece.
So indeed to me, humour, comedy, joke, funny story, or whatever you call it, is naturally relaxing and a neutralizer to the saturating pressures of work. That will explain the fact why I love comedy shows and films. After all, there is no substitute to the decent therapeutic elements of feeling happy and feeling good when you laugh. As the saying goes: ' Laughter is the best medicine'. When I listen to good jokes, life becomes more beautiful and pleasing. It keeps us young.

ENGLISH TONGUE TEASERS

by Earlie Doriman
Many Filipinos learn the English language as early as when they learn to speak a single word. We learn to say words like dog, cat, moon, even before we understand what these words really mean. We even know how to say ‘apple’ and not bothered how it looked like and whether or not we grow them in our farm. English is not strange to us at least, and it doesn’t matter if we become at times too literal in translating Filipino terms to its English equivalent, as long as we are able to convey ourselves in this crazy language, that’s quite an achievement.

When the Spaniards sold the Philippine islands to the Americans during the early 1900’s, English was introduced and in fact enforced to be the official language spoken in the entire archipelago. There began the familiarity of Filipinos to the language of the ‘whites’, and eventually some learned to become good speakers and writers of it. Most of the daily newspapers in the Philippines nowadays are written in English, the constitution is in English, medium of instruction in schools is English, and business correspondence is English, amongst others. Practically, we hear English everyday.

I am not really confident with my English skills, I maybe able to write fairly well, but to speak the language is not simple for me. It appears these two faculties do not go along at the same wavelength. I honestly find writing easier because I own my time and I can chose a topic that suits my leaning. On the other hand, speaking requires quickness of thoughts and tongue that deliver phrases using appropriate terms.

EXODUS OF THE FITTEST

by Earlie Doriman

I met a lady in her 50’s who sat next to me in the plane whilst on my way to Cebu, Philippines a few years back. She  restored my sanity while few kilometres above the ground (I was honestly crowded with anxiety then). She was a very intelligent woman, I should say, who shared her thoughts concerning her disappointments about the exodus of many Filipino intellectuals, leaving the Philippines scarce of proficient, skilled, and capable professionals. I forgot to ask her name, so I’ll just call her Ms Clever.
At present, there are more than 10 percent of the Filipino population working in different parts of the world. Every year more and more are leaving the country, looking for the greener pasture in different lands. Sadly, few hundreds are exploited and abused. What is very depressing is that many of these skilled professionals are doing non-skilled works just to get a far better pay than the more venerable works they left aside in the country. The greatest number of the OFW population found their niche in the different country states of the Americas. A good number found their second home in the countries of Europe particularly in the UK. This throng are mostly of health related profession such as nurses, doctors, medical technologists, pharmacists, and etc; IT experts; and even teachers. The irony, some of our specialist doctors, consultants, and medical experts, study nursing just to get qualifications and possibly work in hospitals and nursing homes in New York, Chicago, Florida, London, Manchester wherever possible and even risking life and soul to the impossible ones like Iraq, Libya, Bahrain, and Afghanistan.
